Summer is a time for travel and relaxation. But even on vacation, safety should never take a break. Among the most underestimated risks is carbon monoxide (CO), an odorless, colorless, and potentially deadly gas that can leak from malfunctioning boilers, water heaters, fireplaces, or stoves.

What is carbon monoxide and why is it dangerous?

CO is released when fuels (such as gas, wood, coal, etc.) don’t burn completely. It’s undetectable to the eye and nose, but it can cause severe poisoning in just a few minutes: headache, nausea, dizziness, and even loss of consciousness.

Be alert in holiday homes and B&Bs

If you’re renting an apartment, a villa, or staying in a B&B:

  • Check for CO detectors in rooms with gas appliances.
  • Ask if heating systems (boiler, water heater, stove) are regularly serviced and inspected.
  • Ventilate closed spaces, especially where open flames are used.
  • Don’t block ventilation grilles—they’re essential to allow toxic gases to escape.

Helpful precautions for all travelers

  • Look out for warning signs: excessive window condensation, burning smells, or yellow flames instead of blue from stoves or burners.
  • Carry our portable CO detector amiCO when traveling, lightweight, easy to use, and potentially life-saving.
  • If you experience any symptoms, go outside immediately and call for help, you could be suffering from CO poisoning.

A legal obligation that protects everyone

As of 2024, Italian law requires all tourist accommodations to be equipped with gas and CO detectors (Decreto Anticipi – Law 191/2023). However, not all properties are yet compliant. Be cautious: ask before booking, and check upon arrival.

On holiday, safety is the first comfort

A safe environment is the first step toward a relaxing vacation. Staying informed, taking precautions, and using the right tools is a simple action that can save lives.

Carbon monoxide can’t be seen, but it can be stopped.
